With the remnants of Hurricane Alex in the mountains of northeastern Mexico, Cameron County offiicials have reopened all beaches and some county parks on South Padre Island.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos made the announcement shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

"The upcoming Fourth of July weekend is an extremely important time for our region and South Padre Island," Cascos said. "I want to inform everyone that South Padre Island and the Laguna Madre area are open for business."

Cascos said authorities are allowing RVs and other high-profile vehicles back into Isla Blanca Park.

Also reopening are Andy Bowie Park and Adolph Thomae Jr. Park, which had also been closed due to Hurricane Alex.

County officials said Beach Access 5, Beach Access 6 and Boca Chica all remain closed but are expected to reopen on either Friday or Saturday.
