The Brownsville Independent School District is opening an emergency shelter for residents forced to evacuate their homes due to Tropical Storm Alex.
The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and hit south of Matamoros.
Brownsville school district officials are opening Porter High School as a hurricane shelter starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The school is located at 3500 International Blvd and has a capacity for approximately 800 people.
Those seeking shelter at the Porter campus are asked to bring identification, clothing, blankets and sleeping bags, toiletries, hand sanitizer, flashlights and extra batteries, medication, infant care items, non-perishable snacks, battery-powered radios, first aid kits, books, magazines, toys, and games.
Pets, alcohol, tobacco products, candles, weapons, and excessive amounts of cash are prohibited within emergency public shelters.
All residents who come to a campus shelter must register upon entering and follow the directions of the designated administrator in charge.
Residents who have medical special needs are urged to contact the Brownsville Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 504-7405 to make alternative arrangements for shelter.
Residents may leave the shelter once the hurricane has subsided and the EOC Coordinator says it is safe.
All Brownsville ISD campuses and offices will be closed Wednesday, June 30 through Friday, July 2, 2010.
Unless otherwise announced, BISD campuses and offices will resume regular operation on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, since Monday, July 5, is a district holiday.
