A San Benito mother is behind bars after she allegedly left her two daughters inside the family car while she went inside a Women, Infants and Children Program office.

San Benito police arrested Miriam Hernandez under two endangering a child charges on Friday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that officers received calls about two children left alone in a car in the parking lot of the Cameron County Annex off Expresway 77/83 and Williams Road around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

An officer found a 2-month-old girl and a 3-year-old girl inside a grey Ford Crown Victoria with the windows partially rolled down.

Hernandez allegedly went inside the WIC office to drop off some paperwork and came out of the building where she faced questioning from officers.

Witnesses told police that they waited outside for at least 20 minutes to see if anyone would come out.

Police said both girls were examined by a doctor and both appeared to be unharmed.

Hernandez is expected to face a San Benito Municipal Judge later today.
