A Matamoros man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle about two pounds of black tar heroin in his shoes.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Sergio De La Garza-Alvarez on federal drug charges on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Matamoros man walked up from Mexico at Brownsville's Gateway International Bridge.

Customs officers inspected his shoes and allegedly found about one pound of heroin in each.

De La Garza-Alvarez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio on Monday morning.

Judge Recio denied bond for De La Garza-Alvarez until a Thursday afternoon.
