A Mission man is behind bars after a police officer allegedly found 55 pounds of cocaine in his car during a traffic stop.

Mission police pulled over 45-year-old Joaquin Garza Jr. off Expressway 83 near Los Ebanos Road on Friday.

Court records filed Garza's case show that he appeared nervous and even had shaky hands.

The patrol officer allegedly saw a burlap sack inside the car.

Court records show that the sack had 20 bundles of cocaine inside.

Garza allegedly told investigators that he was getting paid $500 dollars to transport drugs but claims he did not know it was cocaine.

Court records show that U.S. Immigrations & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents took over the case.

Garza appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Monday morning.

Court records show that Garza is an American citizen.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Garza until a Thursday morning hearing.
