A popular website used to inform the public about public safety threats is down for 'reconstruction'.

The Tamaulipas Centro de Informacion Oportuna had been used to report shootouts and murders for the past three months.

The website was created shortly after a deadly war between former allies the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas erupted in February.

The Mexican Army and Navy has been drawn into separate shootouts with drug traffickers as the Mexican government tries to maintain order.

The website, which was divided by municipality, had become the a primary source of information for the public about shootouts throughout the state.

A recent visitor counter on the Tamaulipas website documented more than 1.2 million visits.

Action 4 News spoke with officials with the Tamaulipas Attorney General's Office on Tuesday morning.

They said the website is down for "reconstruction" but were not able to provide a timetable on when it would be restored.

It was a calm weekend but the City of Reynosa is still using its Twitter account to inform the public about safety threats there.
