In less than 24 hours a new seat belt law will go into effect.
The new state law says any child under the age of 8 and or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches should be restrained.
But how do you know if they are properly secure?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages three to six.
Mainly because three out of every four children in child safety seats are not properly secured or even worse not restrained at all.
"We have found that in many accidents, children are getting hurt because they were not equipped with a booster seat." said Detective Reynaldo Delua with the Harlingen Police Department.
Detective Delua explains the proper way of seating newborns to children up to one year old.
Babies in this age group must wear a 5 point harness and be fully secured from the chest to the hips.
Delua said "This is the strongest part of any child, if you put it low you can damage the stomach area, it's suppose to go parrell with the armpits."
The child must also be strapped in facing the back of the vehicle.
It's not until the child is between the ages of 1 and four when they can face forward.
And don't forget about children ages 4 through 8; they must be in a booster seat.
