The Mercedes Independent School District is set to receive $5.9 million dollars in a settlement over construction deficiencies at John F. Kennedy Elementary School.

Michael Salinas, an attorney representing the school district, confirmed the deal to Action 4 News.

The school was built at a cost of $6.5 million dollars to taxpayers but was shut down in 2007 for "engineering and design" deficiencies.

The district reported that it costs taxpayers of $5,000 dollars a month for building maintenance, according to the school district.

After getting shut down, the school district said they spent over $230,000 dollars moving students to another school.

Currently, the school district is still negotiating with two defendants.

Salinas said the school district hopes to reach an agreement with the remaining defendants in the next few weeks.
