It is a place to shape young minds.
The Horizon Montessori Charter School in McAllen teaches students, pre-K through sixth grades, academic and social growth.
But, now, parents are the ones doing the learning.
It turns out Bill Wayne Johnson has been volunteering at the school.
He's a registered sex offender--convicted for indecency with a an 8-year-old child.
Norma Cano recognized his mug shot.
Reporter: "Does it worry you?"'
Cano: "Yes. A lot."
The kicker, Johnson is registered on the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) website and he does have to register every year as a sex offender.
But because there is no legal restrictions against him he can be around children.
Billy Wayne's wife is aware of the complaints against her husband.
She told Action 4 News that flyers were passed around the school with his background information.
She said her husband is not legally restricted from children and parents should not be concerned with him.
"The next time the callers calls... tell them there's a sex offender working at the school that's not supposed to be there... and they're not harassing him," she said.
School administrators released this statement regarding the matter.
The school released the following statement:
"Safety is of utmost priority at Horizon Montessori. Our campus is unique in the sense we know every single child and parent; this allows us to regulate and monitor all visits in and around our school diligently. At no time do we allow outsiders onto our campus. Visitors, volunteers, and parents are welcomed with proper documentation and local district policy. We have been consistent and fair in following all policies to maximize the safety of our students. South Texas Educational Technologies, Inc. implements all the laws set forth by Texas Education Agency which includes parental rights for all of our students."
One parent, who did not want to be identified, said she has not lost faith in the school.
"It's scary... but I trust the school more than this personm," the parent said. "I don't think my child would be in any kind of risk."
