A Border Patrol agent is being credited for helping to put out a small fire at Fort Brown Villas in Brownsville.

Border Patrol officials told Action 4 News that the fire happened at the apartment complex off University Drive around noon Tuesday.

A Border Patrol agent was patrolling the area when he was flagged down by a man who appeared flustered.

The man led the agent to an apartment where smoke was coming from inside the door.

The Border Patrol agent went inside and helped a woman out of the apartment.

Once everyone was outside, the Border Patrol agent doused the fire.

Brownsville firefighters arrived at the scene but left shortly after because the fire had already been put out.

Fire Chief Lenny Perez told Action 4 News that the fire was started after insulation caught on fire during a plumbing project.

Acting Border Patrol Chief Eligio Peña said his agents leave fighting fires to the the professionals but commended the agent for being a first responder to the scene.
