A Mission man accused of driving drunk and killing a 61-year-old woman was arraigned Saturday afternoon in Progreso.
Family members of Dalia Morin clapped at the announcement that the bond for Refugio Esqueda, the man they say killed her, was set at $1 million.
"We are very happy that he's going to be out of harm’s way and somebody else is not going to go through what we’ve been through," Minerva Carranza, Morin’s sister, told Action 4 News.
Esqueda is accused of driving drunk and crashing into Morin's car the early morning of April 11.
The impact killed Morin on the spot.
"We know he was drunk and we know he's had a previous arrest for that," said Elena Luna, also sister to Morin.
Progreso police arrested Esqueda Friday.
He was taken to the Hidalgo County Jail following his arraignment in Progreso on Sunday afternoon.
"He took my sister and we’re gonna miss her forever,” Carranza said among sobs. “I don’t feel sorry for him at all, not one bit."
Family members said they hope Esqueda realizes the damage he caused the family.
They also hope this serves as a reminder to others: If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.
"Dalia had so much life left and she was a giver so all these people she would've been given to are missing out," Luna added.
"Please don’t drink and drive,” Carranza pleaded. “If you're gonna be drinking, have a designated driver so that you don’t go and kill somebody else, and somebody else will be grieving as we are."
That is a message the family says they will continue to spread, in memory of their loved one.
