A Matamoros man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle more than a million dollars worth of cocaine and heroin in the dashboard of his car.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Jose Luis Lopez-Uresti under federal drug charges on Friday.

Court records show the 58-year-old Matamoros man drove up from Mexico at the B&M International Bridge in a 2008 Volkswagen Crossfox.

Customs officers sent Lopez-Uresti to secondary inspection where they allegedly examined his dashboard.

Officers allegedly found five bundles with 12.6 pounds of heroin and seven bundles with 18 pounds of cocaine inside.

Lopez-Uresti appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Ronald Morgan on Monday morning.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Lopez-Uresti until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
