The costs of the trial for John Allen Rubio will rise significantly from the change in venue, according to Action 4’s legal analyst.

A previous estimate from Cameron County Judge Carlos Casos put the costs anywhere from $600,000-750,000.

But on Monday, Judge Noe Gonzales granted a change of venue for the trial from Cameron to Hidalgo County, meaning the costs will likely rise.

"They probably will get their own hotel room, probably a suite of rooms, or maybe a floor to set up their base to try this case,” Action 4 News Legal Analyst John Blaylock said, referring to defense and prosecution attorneys. “Both sides will have to do that and Cameron County will have to foot the bill."

He added that anytime you move a trial, the costs will always increase.

"There's just going to be a lot of running back and forth between Cameron and Hidalgo County,” Blaylock said. “All these things make the costs of litigation go way up."

Judge Carlos Cascos was unable to provide an updated estimate on the costs of the trial, but he confirmed that the county would be paying for transportation costs involved in the case.
