Driving across the border to buy medicine without a prescription may become a thing of the past for many Rio Grande Valley residents.

Mexican officials recently announced that they would begin to crack down on the sale of drugs without prescription.

That has people on both sides of the border unhappy.

Many Valley residents without health insurance say they can't afford to see American doctors or buy presciption drugs in local pharmacies.

They cross the border to buy medication for a variety of health issues.

Many American doctors frown upon the practice of "self-medication" saying it leads to health risks and creating antibiotic-resistant diseases.
