A traffic stop in Weslaco ended with two arrests and the seizure of 2,500 pounds of marijuana hidden in a shipment of avocados.
Weslaco police told Action 4 News that an officer stopped an 18-wheeler driving east on U.S. Expressway 83 late Friday afternoon.
Investigators said the driver Marciano Noriega Gonzalez appeared nervous.
A K-9 officer arrived at the scene and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics.
Authorities took the 18-wheeler to the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge where a commercial X-Ray machine helped investigators find 2,500 pounds of marijuana hidden among the shipment of avocados.
Police arrested both 45-year-old Gonzalez and his 47-year-old passenger Patricia Marquez De Haro under felony marijuana charges.
Authorities also charged Gonzalez with carrying a prohibited weapon after discovering he had a knife made to look like a belt buckle.
Investigators said Gonzalez is from Yakima, Washington while De Haro is from Corona, California.
Gonzalez remains in custody under $102,500 dollars in bonds while De Haro remains in custody under $100,000 dollars in bonds.
