WESLACO, TEXAS -- Weslaco police have arrested a man who allegedly shot a dog during a robbery attempt outside a Stripes convenience store.

Investigators said 19-year-old Ronnie James Villalpando pulled a gun on Leon Escalon early Saturday morning on the corner of Westgate Drive and Business 83.

In the process, Escalon claimed his dog started barking and Villalpando shot the animal.

Escalon struggled with Villalpando, who dropped his gun and left it at the scene.

Villalpando then jumped into a black passenger car and left.

A Weslaco police officer was stopped at a nearby intersection and chased the vehicle, but lost Villalpando.

Buster, the Boxer, ran away injured and has not been seen since.

Weslaco police arrested Villalpando in Elsa on Monday night on charges of Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon and Evading with a Vehicle.

Villalpando was charged Tuesday and is currently in the Hidalgo County Jail on a bond of $52,500.
