HOUSTON (AP) -- Four convicted weapons traffickers in the Houston area are going to prison for the purchase of guns linked to Mexican drug cartels.

Court documents indicate the cash purchase of at least 328 guns benefited Mexico's Gulf Cartel.

Four men were sentenced Tuesday over their guilty pleas to lying on a federal form by stating the guns were for their own use. Each received prison terms of a year or less.

Prosecutors say the guns turned up at a range of crime scenes, including the murder of police officers in Acapulco and the kidnapping of a Puebla businessman.

Sentencing for others linked to the investigation was scheduled through Thursday.

The Houston Chronicle reports all of those involved are friends, or are related, and knew each other from their days at Klein Forest High School.
