A high-speed chase with an alleged drug smuggler ended with a rollover accident in Ranch Viejo.

Border Patrol agents told Action 4 News that it started along the Rio Grande south of San Benito late Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of a suspicious Chevrolet Suburban fled the scene and headed north on FM 2520.

Regional Border Patrol spokesman Joe Treviño told Action 4 News that San Benito police pursued the SUV.

According to reports, Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety state troopers joined in the chase.

The chase ended on the frontage road of U.S. Expressway 77/83 near FM 511 between Rancho Viejo and Olmito.

Treviño told Action 4 News that Border Patrol agents reported the Suburban was "loaded" with marijuana.

The driver was injured and taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

The driver's identitity has not been released but Treviño said the male driver was the only person inside the Suburban.

It's not clear what charges the driver will face once he is released from the hospital.
