Authorities are investigating the cause an early Monday morning fire that damaged a Mercedes church.
Merecedes firefighters were called out to First United Methodist Church off West 16th Street around 4:30 a.m. Monday.
Fire Chief Jaime Garcia said investigators believe the fire started in the altar area of the church.
A cause has not been determined but Garcia said the authorities first responded when an alarm company for the church called reporting a power failure.
Garcia said the church had heavy damage in the altar area and smoke damage throughout the building.
