Baby killed in Reynosa crossfire

A Reynosa family is grieving after their 1-year-old daughter was killed in the crossfire of a shootout between soldiers and alleged criminals.

The Metro Noticias de Tamaulipas newspaper reported the death of 17-month-old Elizabeth Martinez-Medrano on it's on-line edition Sunday.

The baby girl's parents told Metro Noticias they were aboard a bus and on their way to a Soriana supermarket to buy diapers and milk when the shooting happened.

Metro Noticias reported that soldiers opened fire on a suspect Dodge Durango with Texas license plates along the Reynosa-Rio Bravo Highway.

Stray bullets entered the bus and hit the baby girl in the hip, wounded the mother and grazed her 19-year-old father in the left forearm.

Metro Noticias reported that the family was taken to Reynosa’s General Hospital but doctor’s could not save the baby girl’s life.

The Mexican military has not issued a statement about the shooting or the suspects.
