Cameron County commissioners have voted to eliminate the Justice of the Peace Precinct 7-2 Court in La Feria.

Commissioners met Tuesday morning where they voted unanimously to close the court.

Precinct 7-2 Justice of the Peace Dan Sanchez told Action 4 News he was disappointed with the decision.

He was fighting to keep his court open and save the jobs of his two employees.

Cameron County commissioners said they wanted to close the court as part of cost-saving measures.

Their decision closes the court in December 2010.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos cited a low caseload for the court and said the closing it will save the county $30,000 to $40,000 dollars a year.

Commissioners decided that two employees working for Judge Sanchez will be moved to the office of Justice of Peace Precinct 7-1 Court also in La Feria.

The commissioner's court decision came ahead of a Friday deadline to start filing as a candidate for the Precinct 7-2  JP Court.
