More than 8,000 teachers on the Mexican side of the border are going to be vaccinated against the seasonal flu.

Mexican media outlets are reporting that teachers in Tamaulipas are concerned for their health following the deaths of several colleagues from complications due to the H1N1 virus.

The Hoy Tamaulipas newspaper reported that more than 8,000 teachers in Matamoros and Valle Hermoso would be given the seasonal flu vaccine for free.

The newspaper reported that the ISSSTE Hospital in Matamoros, state officials and the teachers union negotiated a deal where teachers would be vaccinated.

Health officials are expected to administer more than 400 vaccines per day over the next two to three weeks.

The Hora Cero newspaper reported that teachers in Reynosa had similar concerns and wanted to receive the H1N1 vaccine.

But the newspaper reported that health officials denied their requested in order to prioritize the vaccination of children and young adults from ages 5 to 29 years old.
