Catching the H1N1 virus will not make someone completely immune to the flu, health experts told Action 4 News.
Brownsville Doctor Santam Bondi said that there is no way to differentiate between H1N1 and the seasonal flu, unless a patient gets tested by the Center for Disease Control or the Health Department in Austin.
But that catching either one will not make you immune to the others.
"If you're H1N1 positive you may get influenza A down the line, plus seasonal influenza changes, the antidents change every year, that's why we need to give you the vaccination every year," Bhondi said.
He added that the ever-changing nature of flu strains makes it difficult for anyone to gain immunity, especially with a virus as recent as the H1N1.
Bhondi said that it is important to be protected and get vaccinated against the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus.
"Now when the infection from the actual virus comes and hits you, your body already has a fighting kind of army against that virus," he said.
