Texas Comptroller Susan Combs is visiting Harlingen on Tuesday to remind Rio Grande Valley residents that they are eligible to receive millions of dollars in unclaimed property.
Combs is expected to meet with area leaders at the Harlingen Cultural Arts Center at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon to discuss unclaimed property given back to the region.
State law requires the Texas Comptroller's office to hold abandoned and unclaimed property reported by businesses and financial institutions until its owners or their legal heirs claim it.
The Texas Comptroller's Office attempts to find the rightful owners of unclaimed properties through annual newspaper advertising, direct mail notices and the agency's Web site.
The state is holding about $2 billion in unclaimed property. This year, the Comptroller's office has returned more than $147 million in claims.
Combs estimates that one in four Texans has money waiting to be claimed.
