LA JOYA, TEXAS -- Some manhole covers stolen from the city of La Joya two weeks ago have been recovered.

La Joya police said Tuesday a Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputy found the covers.

Police said it was important to get them back because they want to keep the holes covered to prevent any accidents.

"Anybody can walk by it and slip right in there, whether there's a human being or an animal," said Lt. Julian Gutierrez.

The case is still under investigation, but police said they have an idea of who was behind the crime.
