A Rio Grande Valley wildlife refuge and a national park site got $2.4 million dollar in stimulus funds on Thursday.

U.S. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz (D-Corpus Chrisit) announced the funding for the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and Palo Alto National Battlefield.

Ortiz told Action 4 News in a written statement that the wildlife refuge will be getting $2.31 million dollars.

The stimulus funds will be used to:

  • Rehabilitate 5.76 miles of one lane Unit 8 County Road
  • Renewable energy—solar photovoltaic projects on buildings
  • Continue restoration of Bahia Grande Wetland Unit
  • Construct 80 to 85-foot long, one-lane vehicle bridges to span marine tidal channels
  • Construct two low water crossings for overflow during tidal surges or high water periods

The Palo Alto Battlefield is getting $83,000 dollars to remove and replace unserviceable air handling units to improve energy efficiency.
