A 36-year-old man wanted for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl in Missouri is behind bars after leading Port Isabel police on a chase.

Port Isabel police got a tip that suspect Benjamin F. Wolkey had been hiding in the area.

Police from Lee’s Summit, Missouri had been trading pictures and information with Port Isabel police about Wolkey.

Authorities said Wolkey had been on the run for several months on a statutory sodomy charge filed after he allegedly raped a 6-year-old girl.

Investigators believe he had been hiding out in Mexico and in the Valley and had even changed his appearance to avoid detection.

Port Isabel officers spotted Wolkey on Tuesday and started following him.

Authorities made their move after they positively ID'd him leaving the Corral Reef on South Padre Island bar on Tuesday night.

Wolkey allegedly lead  leading to a chase down Padre Boulevard that lasted two to three minutes.

The Missouri man pulled into a Stripes store on Island and then fled on foot.

Officers caught him at a nearby apartment complex.

Wolkey now faces local evading arrest and failure to ID charges.

The Missouri man is expected to be transferred to the Cameron County Jail but it's not clear when he'll be extradited to Missouri because of the local charges.
