BROWNSVILLE -- A Brownsville supermarket is speaking about its future after filing for bankruptcy.
Lopez Supermarkets, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.
The supermarket chain's attorney Eduardo Rodriguez spoke to Action 4 News about the case.
He said in a telephone interview from a conference in Galveston that the Brownsville-based supermarket chain fell on hard times.
Court filings show the company made $1.62 million last year but had $1.7 million in expenses.
"Everyone is struggling with the economy... and supermarkets are not exempt from that," Rodriguez said.
The Lopez family opened its first store in the 1950s.
The Brownsville-based chain was eventually divided among various family members who own different stores.
Court records list Alicia Lopez as president of Lopez Supermarket, Inc., which owns a store off Ringgold Street and another Southmost Road.
A court date has not been set but Rodriguez said the Chapter 11 filing allows Lopez Supermarkets, Inc. to remain open and reorganize.
"We're going to better serve the public once we're out of it," Rodriguez said on his client's behalf.
