U.S. Border Patrol Agents in the Rio Grande Valley have hit a new record.

They have surpassed 750,000 pounds of marijuana seizures for the year.

That amount is twice the amount from last year.

In 2008, agents seized 46,000 pounds of cocaine and 377,000 pounds of marijuana.

Nationwide, the valley sector ranks first in cocaine seizures and second for marijuana busts.

Border Patrol officials chalked up their success to the increased presence of boots on the ground, new technology and infrastructure.

"We attribute this milestone to the combination of local law enforcement agencies, federal and state resources and the re-enforcement of agents along the border," said Lee Cabrera, Border Patrol Spokesperson.
