The 39th annual Port Mansfield Fishing Tournament is set for this coming weekend, July 24th and 25th.

Both bay and offshore fishing have been exceptional this year and tournament committeeman Terry Neal is anticipating a great weekend in Willacy County.

“We are really lucky this year, we got the jetties dredged to 28 foot out there so the offshore boats can come and go as they please this year,” Capt. Neal said. “The mouth of the harbor at Port Mansfield also got dredged.”

The Mansfield Channel had not been dredged for 12 years and had become dangerously shallow, but thanks to the recent dredging this will be the first tournament in several years that will allow for the safe passage of big offshore boats.

“The snapper fishing is awesome like it always is out there,” Neal said. “The blue water is just coming in so we are  really anticipating some good fishing out there this year.”

And the bay fishing has been phenomenal.

“The trout fishing is just hard to believe it has been so good,” Neal said. “It has been 20 years probably since most of us have seen this type of fishing we have had this year.”

Registration for the 39th Port Mansfield Fishing Tournament is set for Thursday, and the first day of fishing is Friday with final weigh in on Saturday evening at 7 pm.

And even if you are unable to fish this year’s tournament, come on down to Port Mansfield for the weigh in on Friday and Saturday afternoon, and you are guaranteed to see some impressive bay and offshore catches.
