RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS -- Congressman Solomon Ortiz has joined State Representative Henry Cuellar and State Representative Ruben Hinojosa in signing a letter to block a double-layer border fence from a Homeland Security spending bill.
The lawmakers are part of group urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to keep the requirement out of the bill.
The senate version of the spending bill currently includes the requirement, which proposes double fencing along 700 miles of the border rather than barriers and high tech equipment.
Local lawmakers said Saturday the amendment unnecessarily extends the length of the border fence at taxpayer expense and wastes money that could be used for other security purposes.
