The City of Weslaco has a new police chief.
Weslaco city commissioners voted in Jose Perez to the position at a special meeting Wednesday night.
He was up against eight other candidates.
Perez is the former police chief of Edcouch.
After his stay in Edcouch, he worked at Progreso Independent School District as an investigator.
Perez replaces J.D. Martinez, who was recently terminated along with several other department heads during what the mayor called "major budget cutbacks."
"I want to make some improvements to make the police department a premier department," said Perez. "I know that we need to focus on training, we need to make sure that we have three unions and hopefully we can work all the unions together, possibly bringing down one union that will better provide service for the community."
