Rio Grande Valley residents headed south of the border over the Fourth of July holiday will not be able to buy alcohol.
Mexico holds its federal elections on Sunday, July 5th.
Under Mexican law, alcohol cannot be sold 24 hours before the election.
Stores, restaurants and bars in Nuevo Progreso, Matamoros, Reynosa and the rest of Mexico will stop selling after midnight Friday.
The sale of alcohol will resume after on Monday after the election.
The law applies for Mexican citizens and visitors to all tourist destinations in Mexico.
According to mexonline.com, Mexico’s “La Ley Seca” or “Dry Law” which prohibits the sale of alcohol during major elections dates back to the Mexican Revolution.
