A Willacy County farmer is now heading a federal agency that helps rural Texans.
President Barack Obama appointed Juan Garcia as the director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency in Texas.
The appointment was announced late Monday.
Garcia brings more than 32 years of experience to the job.
The Willacy County native was raised on a cotton, grain sorghum and cattle ranch.
He holds a bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.
The Farm Service Agency provides many services including loans for farm equipment, seed and fertilizer, as well as rural housing loans to help rural people buy, build or rent housing.
