More than 50 live chickens and roosters are in quarantine after a Mexican man allegedly tried to import them into the United States without the proper paperwork.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized the birds at the Gateway International Bridge early Monday morning.

A Matamoros man drove into the United States from Mexico and told customs officers he had the birds.

Customs officers looked at the man’s trailer and found more than 50 chickens and roosters packed inside.

The birds were seized because the driver did not have proper certification.

The chickens and roosters were turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services where they will be inspected for animal-bourne diseases.

Authorities said the driver was not fined because he declared the birds immediately.
