MCALLEN -- After fighting in a boxing match back on June 4th, Juan Lucio and two other boxers from the Imperial Boxing Gym said they have a check from Plomo Promotions, but no money.
“They make sure you get paid before leaving the locker-room. He did give us our checks, but it just bounces,” said Juan Lucio, a boxer with Imperial Boxing Gym.
Every time Lucio went to the bank, they told the account that the check is linked to doesn’t have enough money.
Fighters have contracts and receive payment on the contracts before they leave the locker room as by boxing law.
But, as Lucio can tell you, a paper check isn’t as good as hard cash.
“It's been really frustrating cause we go to the bank and its like every time they tell us the same thing,” said Lucio, “they have insufficient funds. It sucks that we work so hard and we got to make weight and work for like months and this happens.”
Action 4 spoke with Plomo Promotions about the matter.
They said all the other boxers got paid that night because it’s customary to cash your checks the day of the event at the box office.
Lucio and two other boxers were unaware, and waited until the next day to cash their checks.
That’s when they were told of the insufficient funds.
Lucio said he just wants what is owed to him.
“We want to get paid and Justice,” said Lucio, “It's not right that we train and this is our job.”
