The San Juan city council has approved a teen curfew that will go into effect in August.
SAN JUAN --
The goal is to keep kids under the age of 17 in their homes and out of trouble.
City leaders said Wednesday they hope the new ordinance will help reduce the number of teenage crimes.
"Preliminary reports indicate that for the past year, we have had a lot of crime between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and 80
percent of those crimes are being caused by juveniles," said San Juan police chief Juan Gonzalez. "The curfew will allow us to remove those children that shouldn't be out on the streets."
The curfew states teens must be off the streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
San Juan police said parents will be cited if their child breaks the curfew.
The fine can be up to $500.
