Former McAllen mayor arrested in DWI wreck

McAllen police arrested the city's former mayor Leo Montalvo after he allegedly caused a DWI wreck over the weekend.

Investigators said the two-car accident happened near the McAllen Convention Center on South Ware Road.

McAllen police arrested Montalvo on DWI charges.

According to the University of Texas at Arlington Center for Mexican-American Studies website, Montalvo graduated from Texas A&M University in 1966 and from the University of Texas law school in 1981.

Texas State Bar records show he is a practicing attorney in McAllen where he also served as mayor from 1997 to 2005.

Montalvo was the first Mexican-American to be elected as mayor of McAllen.
