Valley International Airport in Harlingen is receiving some much needed grant money to not only make improvements, but to maintain the facility for a long period of time.
The grant money worth $975,000 was awarded to Valley International Airport from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The money will allow administrators to make more improvements to the airport.
The F-A-A approved a series of grants last year and this year for maintenance and safety upgrades at Valley International.
According to director Michael Browning, some of the money will be used to overlay the two taxiway pavements of Delta, which is about 60 years old, and Bravo, which is about 15 years old.
They will also be adding lights on the runways.
Browning added later this year, more of the money will be used for a geographical information system -- which is a detailed mapping system of the airport.
Valley International Airport was one of six airports across the country chosen for this grant.
The F-A-A said that the airport was chosen because administrators at the airport have proven they use the money responsibly.
