BROWNSVILLE -- It's official hurricane season 2009 is here.
City leaders in Brownsville are conducting mock emergency drills to make sure things run smoothly if a major storm were to strike.
Assistant city manager Jeff Johnston says the purpose was to make the exercise as real as possible “You’re going to see well over 75 people who represent not just the city of Brownsville departments but the Brownsville's Public Utilities Board as well as other outside agencies."
Johnston says this will help learn from Hurricane Dolly mistakes and move forward with a different more effective approach that works after the storm.
“What we’re focusing on this year” he says “ is what happens after the fact and this exercise with the next 24 hours is going to take us about 4-5 days after hurricane were to impact South Texas.”
That's why it's important for families, not only in Brownsville but across the Valley, to stay informed and sign up for services now instead of waiting saying “they should call 2-11 now and not right before a storm arrives.”
Johnston says that by registering with the 2-11 system individuals allow them to be aware of the situation and pre-plan ahead of time, and gives the public this advise “Stay informed keep your eye on your favorite media, television, radio station and make sure your aware for what’s going on."
