The city of McAllen broke ground on the Valley's first dog park.

The new park, at Fifth Street and Tamarack, will give pet owners without a yard the opportunity to let their pets off their leash and get plenty of exercise.

Half the land for the park was donated by the Shell Exploration and Production Company.

To expand McAllen's existing park, new renovations will also include a walking trail.

Richard Cortez, the Mayor of McAllen, said, "We don't just want to be the best in South Texas, we want to be the best anywhere. And, with your help, we'll get there.”

In addition to being a dog park, the facility will provide flood protection to roughly 50 homes in the area, as a storm water detention facility.

The dog park is scheduled to open on September 1st.
