A Las Vegas man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after customs officers allegedly caught him smuggling suicide drugs from Mexico.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Jeff George Ostfeld at the Progreso International Bridge on Monday.

The 33-year-old Las Vegas man allegedly hid 1,200 milliliters of the animal tranquilizer pentobarbital and other drugs in his luggage.

Federal prosecutors said Ostfeld is still being investigate for a possible roll in the suicide of 29-year-old Oregon woman Jennifer Yolanda Malone.

She was found dead on Monday inside a hotel room in the Tamaulipas border town of Nuevo Progreso.

Ostfeld appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby on Friday where the Las Vegas man was ordered to be held without bond pending trial.

Federal prosecutors said they successfully argued that Ostfeld  was both a flight risk and a danger to the community.

Importation of and possession with intent to distribute pentobarbital is punishable up to 20 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine.
