The American Red Cross is passing along water safety tips after people already died on South Padre Island this season.
Officials are urging swimmers caught in a rip current not to fight it.
Instead, swimmers are being asked to swim parallel to the shore until they are out of the current.
Swimmers are also being asked to swim with a buddy and stay within reaching distance of that buddy.
Josue Flores with the Red Cross told Action 4 News it's also important you know CPR and keep a phone nearby to call 911.
"If you save one life... I think it's extremely important.."
Flores said swimmers should be mindful of the "Dangerous Too's":
- Too Tired
- Too Cold
- Too Much Sun
- Too Far From Safety
- Too Much Strenuous Activity
