A Rio Grande Valley organization told Action 4 News that they are helping parents protect their children in a new way.
The Texas Foundation For Safer Children is holding its annual Project One Thousand event at Sunrise mall in Brownsville.
The organization partnered with the Brownsville ISD Police Department to parents with new tools in case their children are abducted.
Oragnizers offered free DNA testing, fingerprinting and photo ID kits to the first 1,000 Valley parents for their little ones.
Frank Treviño with Texas Foundation For Safer Children said several high-profile child abduction cases have grabbed headlines nationwide.
"You don't have to look past what you do everyday in the news to see how many children are disappearing," Treviño said. "As a 27-year counselor and educator having to work that area, dealing with parents of either missing or hurt children we felt it was time to step up to the plate."
Anyone who would like to host a Project One Thousand in their community, is urged to go to their website or call (800) 771-8680.
