EAST LANSING, MICH. (AP) -- Three ex-1970s Michigan State football players plan a 2,000-mile charity bike ride from the East Lansing campus to Matamoros, Mexico.

They're trying to help raise $500,000 needed to finish construction of an orphanage in the border city.

It's on top of $800,000 already raised.

Ex-defensive tackle John Shinsky and wife Cindy seek to open an orphanage in Matamoros, across the U.S.-Mexico border from Brownsville, Texas.

The Lansing State Journal say he'll leave Saturday with Joe DeLamielleure, who went on to become an NFL Hall of Famer, and Eljay Bowron, who went on to head the Secret Service.

The route crosses Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
