Several members from the Rio Grande Valley's Veterans Alliance were at the Texas State Capitol on Wednesday.

The veterans told the Rio Grande Guardian that they came to support a Veterans Administration hospital bill but they ended up cheering for two.

A resolution by State Rep. Aaron Peña (D-Edinburg) would memorialize the wishes of the legislature that a v-a hospital be built in the Valley.

That bill was heard and passed, Which rarely happens the same day.

The same committee also passed a bill by State Rep. Ismael "Kino" Flores (D-Mission) requiring the state help build a veterans hospital.

Vetrans Alliance Chairman Homer Gallegus said he was pleased by the support.

"Now I know what a home run hitter in the big leagues feels like," Gaullegus said. "I think we accomplished a lot. I guess we've been blessed with the two state representatives who have been fighting for us from day one."

The Rio Grande Guardian reported that only eight of Texas' 31 congressmen in Washington DC have pledged support for the veterans hospital bill.

This story comes from our media partner, the Rio Grande Guardian.
