RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS -- If you use satellite television, a recently filed bill may increase taxes on the service.

State Representative Rene Oliveira filed the bill.

It calls for an increase in sales tax of direct broadcast satellite service in some areas by almost 60 percent.

According to Oliveira, satellite companies are only paying 6.25 percent on sales tax compared to cable companies, who pay 13.25 percent.

"Satellite companies are also except from local taxes and property taxes because most of them don't have any buildings or structures in the area," said Rep. Oliveira.

Rep. Oliveira said the goal is to make sure there is a fair tax policy in Texas, even if it means lowering the taxes of cable providers.
