MERCEDES, TEXAS -- Two Mercedes police officers responding to a domestic disturbance call early Wednesday end up shooting a man armed with a shotgun.

It happened around 5 a.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of Missouri Street.

Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado said the officers responded to a call of a man harming his family members.

When they arrived, the man allegedly turned the gun on the officers in a threatening manner.

One officer fired back and hit the man, wounding him.

The man was taken to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, where he's being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Mercedes police are not releasing the man's name, stating they don't yet know if the man is telling the truth about his identity.

He will be charged once he is released from the hospital.

The two officers involved are now on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in the event of a police shooting.

They are both undergoing counseling.
