LA JOYA, TEXAS -- Police officers are trained to expect the unexpected, and two La Joya officers put that training to the test on Saturday.
Lt. Julian Gutierrez and Officer Cesar Sanez jumped into action when a woman pulled up at the station in the process of giving birth.
"Her water busted somewhere between Sullivan City and here, so they pulled over in front of the police department," said La Joya P.D. spokesman Joe Cantu.
Maria Olivia Serna of Rio Grande City started having contractions and asked her neighbor to rush her to the hospital in Mission.
But the baby couldn't wait.
"It feels great being the mother of a little boy," said Serna.
"She said 'I'm going to name him after you.' I said, 'No ma'am, don't do that because my wife would get mad," joked Lt. Gutierrez.
Serna and her son are doing well.
