WILLACY COUNTY, TEXAS -- A former Willacy County Judge has passed away.

Simon Salinas lost his battle with lung cancer Monday night.

He was 72 years old.

His friends and former colleagues say he will be remembered as a hard working and forward looking judge, who brought economic development to the mostly agricultural county.

Salinas was a three-term county judge, first elected in 1994.

He retired in 2007.

He leaves behind a wife, son and two daughters.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
